E209 – Daniel Harkins: Feats of Strength (with Nathan Jones)

Daniel Harkins, as the muscle of Team Sincerity, is a certifiable badass due to his many feats of strength.  He is the only person we’ve met who once commuted 65 miles in the snow by bike, has completed many adventurous bicycle tours with a bit of stealth camping, and is also a member of the National Guard.  He tells us what it takes to be awesome no matter where you are.

We’re also joined by another certifiable badass who’s no stranger to feats of strength himself: Nathan Jones of Portland bicycle shop Ride Yr Bike and the TransAm Bike Race.

A great resource for people on bikes in Oregon is Ride Oregon Ride.

Also: Nathan Jones had a burger jump BBQ, and Brock had some issues with a U-lock, and Minnesota Public Radio’s Pedal Hub is a fantastic show!

E208 – type 5 MAX car preview

Hey there folks!  So we promised you an episode, then we tried to record it and the forces of nature knocked out the power to our studio and sucked our first attempt into the abyss. Fortunately, I have all of this interview audio from my visit to the TriMet Type 5 rail car preview lying around, and I’d been meaning to get it out to you anyways.  So accept this rough sketch of a show as a token of our appreciation for you, the listener!  We’ll be back next week with the elements on our side.  Until then, cheers!  – Brock

E207 – Meghan Sinnott: Head & Shoulders Knees & Toes

Megan Sinnott joins us to talk about her employer, Nutcase Helmets & their design contest, trade tips on clothing & fashion aboard bikes, running social media for many events including the WNBR and the Midnight Mystery Ride and her connection to the much-loved Filmed By Bike festival.

Note: a portion of this week’s recording was lost to technical problems; the break in recording is signified by a static sound effect, and we reference the lost conversation occasionally from then on.  Our apologies, and we’ve ordered some new equipment to mitigate these sorts of problems in the future. Thanks for your patience & understanding!

Also: Brock dressed as a tiger for Halloween and appreciates sewing; Aaron does a little more rain cape testing.

E206 – Timo & Esther: Sweet Bike Love

Timo & Esther are established figures in the Portland transportation scene, Timo as a part of the Portland Bureau of Transportation & Esther with Sunday Parkways events. We chat with them about how bicycling (and breakfast on the bridges) brought them together, a bikey wedding near Silverton, OR, and a honeymoon of epic proportions through southern Europe!

Our musings on bicycle music brought these mentions: Johnnyrandom’s “Bespoken”, Frank Zappa, and the Portland Bike Ensemble.

Also: Brock rides through the hardest rain of the season to check out the new Type 5 MAX light rail cars, meets listener John from Maine; Aaron is off drugs! He also ran into Greg and Sarah from Funemployment Radio, who are having a live show soon.  TheTransportastic studio opener was awesome.

E205 – Transportastic Studio Opening Party Podcast LIVE

So now that we at Open Roads Broadcasting have a network of shows being produced around themes of bicycling, transport, and simpler living, we decided to throw a party at the Independent Publishing Resource Center to show off our new digs.  We recorded audio postcards (short interviews which you’ll hear included in future shows soon), posed in a photo booth that turns you into a crosswalk signal, played urban growth boundary twister, and recorded a live podcast for the crowd using hot-swappable show hosts!

Open Roads Broadcasting website coming soon!

E204 – Anna Olsen & Justin Miles: We’re New Here

Anna Olsen used to be a podcast listener from Oklahoma. Now, she’s a guest!  I guess she’ll never have to listen again.  We’re glad to welcome her to Portland after an education at United Bicycle Institute where she learned to be a bicycle mechanic.  Her coworker Justin Miles joins us as well.

Also: Drew lends the rain cape! Brock gives it a first go; the Transportastic studio opener is on 10/25 6:30pm at IPRC! Aaron’s still on drugs, and does a very frugal thing followed by a rather infrugal thing.

E203 – Olive & Dingo: Clowning Around

Dingo Dizmal & Olive Rootbeerare professional clowns in Portland and make entertainment and fun a lifestyle.  From days of yore to the present day, their distinctive style & bikes make them local icons and loved legends in bikey circles.  We chat about their cafe shows, clowning & its phobia, tallbikes and their occasional misappropriation, and how activism dovetails into everyday lifestyle habits. So much good stuff! I couldn’t edit it down. Settle in folks, it’s a long one.

Also: Brock gets hailed by a listener downtown, and Aaron gets a new patch on his jacket; the Transportastic studio opener is on 10/25 6:30pm at IPRC!

note: still ironing out the wrinkles of our new machine and the audio cuts to left-channel only in the last 10-15 minutes.

apparently neither host is excited to be in a photograph; extra points for our guests!

Aaron Hand & Raggy are bike polo enthusiasts in Portland whom we connected with through listener James.  They break down bike polo into its basics to help us understand how the game works, how it differs from traditional polo, how much fun it is, and how to get involved! Check out 3-2-1 Polo and League of Bike Polo.

Also: Aaron takes some drugs and trips balls, and Brock & Adele take some people bicycle camping in Cascade Locks.

E200 – LIVE at Velo Cult: Dan Christensen, Sarah Gilbert, & Joe Kurmaskie

It’s been nearly 4 years of podcasting, and we celebrate with a live storytelling event at Velo Cult Bike Shop & Tavern in Portland OR’s Hollywood district.  Dan Christensen tells his account of how bicycling allows the world to touch him, Sarah Gilbert lays down the beat poetry of empowerment, and Joe Kurmaskie shares several stories of life on two wheels.  We also enjoyed a ride with the Grilled By Bike crew before the show!
