E584 – Summer Adventures & Bike Travel Dreams

Guthrie stands in the shade with a distant view of water behind. He wears a hoodie, hat, and sunglasses, and stands next to his bike, loaded up with stuffed panniers. As we dig out our rain pants and bike lights, Aaron, Armando, Guthrie, and Joan gather outside in person on a drizzly night to chat about the best of summer and discuss future bike dreams and adventures. Plus we share adventures and plans from listeners Brian, Hami, Emily, Brock, and @blackrtea.

Check out this video of a lovely Vancouver Island bikeway (mentioned by Joan, tweet via Martyn Schmool).

News & such
Josh Guttmacher sent us a few things: a great story (with photos!) about how Denmark is repurposing old wind turbine blades as bike shelters and a Nature article from 2008, “Bumper Stickers Reveal Link to Road Rage”(!). Thanks, Josh!

And, we mark about a year since Armando and Joan joined the podcast as co-hosts. Cheers!

E582 – Ramon Martinez Chats Bike Indy

Ramon faces the camera, smiling. He's wearing a bike helmet, sunglasses, and a turquoise cycling jersey over black long sleeves, with a black vest, and orange gloves. His hand is visibly perched on top of bike handlebars.Ramon Martinez joins us from the city of Independence, Oregon to let us know how he’s helping to turn this small Willamette Valley city into a big cycling destination. “Drop the Hammer” weekends offer short or long road or off-road rides that include some competition (if you want). Best thing about these rides? Your own start times!

In response to our Wayfinding episode, we heard from a few folks. Maria Schur, @bicyclekitty told us, via Instagram, “When lost in the country on an overcast day (can’t determine south from the sun’s position), keep in mind that satellite dishes (in our region) point south.” And on Twitter, @VerseCycle Carolina Burrows said, “I sometimes look at churches to try and figure out which way’s east (the direction the seats face inside, so usually where the big stained glass window is).”

E570 – All Bodies On Bikes with Kailey Kornhauser

Kailey is sitting at a picnic table facing and fixing a muddy, upside bike. She has a blue puffy coat and a green hairband holds back her reddish hair. She is smiling.

Joan and Armando talk with Kailey Kornhauser about her fantastic new film, All Bodies on Bikes, and fatphobia and size discrimination within the world of bicycling. Kailey is a PhD student and bikepacker based in Corvallis, Oregon. She and her collaborator Marley Blonsky are advocates for size-inclusivity in bicycling, consulting with vendors and leading webinars along with working with Shimano on the new documentary. Kailey chats with us about bikepacking and what it’s been like to have a large following of folks looking for inspiration.

E568 – Swift Summit with Trevor

rider high five Event organizer Trevor and reflection

Trevor joins us to chat about the Swift Summit, the spirit of a well tuned event, and aspirations for the future.

From the race:

Join those who are looking to dig deep for an event like no other: part brevet, part gran fondo, part self-supported endurance road race. Riders are provided a cue sheet, a marked course, and aid station/control points approximately 40 miles apart to restock. In between those support checks, riders can access convenience stores and other neutral amenities along the course as needed. The 200-mile route boasts over 10,000 feet of climbing and features several short sections of hard-packed gravel roads, while the 100-mile route checks in just over 5,000 feet of climbing and has no gravel.  Both courses offer scenic views of the Cascades Mountain range and run alongside the swift Santiam and Calapooia Rivers.

E554 – Guthrie’s Adventures in 2020

Cohost Guthrie Straw took a very responsible, very intense and very isolated bicycle tour across Oregon last summer in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.  How do you stay separated from others, avoid stores, and carry all your food while riding across the state?  We talk about this.  And a LOT about food.

See Guthrie’s photos here. (click link for more)

E550 – TEN YEAR PODSTRAVAGANZA

OMG people!  It’s been 10 years since The Sprocket Podcast started dropping mp3s on the internet full of bicycle talk with a conscience.  So grateful for your presence with us in this made-up imaginary space that in which nonetheless we’ve cultivated productive and challenging conversations about real issues and inextricably woven them into complete bullshit.  That is why we love you!

For this 10 year anniversary and to mark the 550th episode of the podcast, we start with an acknowledgement of the time we are living through in the American democracy, toast Brock’s grandfather after his passing, acknowledge the ancestral occupants of the land we live in, and then get into some QUESTIONS.

rest in peace, Papa

E548 – Caroline Burrows, Poet By Bike

This episode we talk to the bicycling poet, Caroline Burrows!  We talk about bicycle touring around the UK, and France, her family connection to touring and her grandfather’s influence, and how, since lockdown, she has been exploring her own area.  Also, is Bristol a nexus for generating famous people?  Find Caroline Burrows, VerseCycle, on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube

E545 – Doug CohenMiller In Kazakhstan!

Doug CohenMiller has been a podcast listener and friend, and we met across time zones to chat without causing a quantum reaction that would implode our known reality.  Doug did a lot of bicycling in Texas before his family relocated to Kazakhstan (no, he hasn’t seen Borat, though we discuss “my wife”) where he braves pummeling winds and bitter cold in three different winter coats!  He’s also the graphic designer behind the coffeeneuring patches!  Stay tuned after the credits for his story of meeting bicycle legend Gary Fisher after chasing him through an airport.

WINTER BIKE LIGHTS
We are pausing the calendar til things are a bit safer, and we don’t have any mail this week. But! We do have something fun. With the pandemic and lack of social outings, winter is looking a bit bleak, so we are asking listeners to decorate your bikes with any extra fun lights, take a photo, and share it with us on any of our social media. Thanks to Mountain Shop and their webinar series that gave Karen the idea to try it out herself!
