E551 – Jen Powis & Air Quality Monitoring By Bike

Today, we speak with Jen Powis from Houston, Texas on air pollution and bicycles and measuring air pollution by bicycle.   We discuss her experience with Sampling The City and Air Alliance Houston, Dr. Robert Bullard, (father of writing on environmental racism), Bike Houston, Houston’s Bayou Greenways, and her part in the Rules of the Game podcast!  And, of course, the “chicken and the egg” question!

AND: apparently it was #boatmonth in Portland again.  And, how to care for your birds during their own contagion time.

Also, as always, thanks to our nationally recognized “top beer bar in Oregon” beverage sponsor, The Beer Mongers on SE12th and Division, now open for more than 4,000 days consecutively. They have a patio outside the place and, if you’re lucky, you might be able to catch some sports with sound.  The big stick remains indoor on the ceiling.  And, as always, thanks to our generous Patreon donors that keep us going!

MAIL
Well, a tweet: Peter Koonce, @pkoonce, transportation engineer and podcast guest tweeted a list of Top 10 podcasts for transportation professionals and included us!

Via Instagram, Junk Miles said, in response to our conversation about bike tours, “Super interesting answers, Joan and team – thank you!”

Answer for J Leko about studded tires from Doug CohenMiller: “I do studded tires. They are AWESOME for Ice. They make minimal difference on snow. I don’t have a Brompton, so I can’t speak directly to that, but maybe some sort of thick neoprene cloth could be carried on board and placed over the tire where it would hit  so it doesn’t scratch.”

E550 – TEN YEAR PODSTRAVAGANZA

OMG people!  It’s been 10 years since The Sprocket Podcast started dropping mp3s on the internet full of bicycle talk with a conscience.  So grateful for your presence with us in this made-up imaginary space that in which nonetheless we’ve cultivated productive and challenging conversations about real issues and inextricably woven them into complete bullshit.  That is why we love you!

For this 10 year anniversary and to mark the 550th episode of the podcast, we start with an acknowledgement of the time we are living through in the American democracy, toast Brock’s grandfather after his passing, acknowledge the ancestral occupants of the land we live in, and then get into some QUESTIONS.

rest in peace, Papa
