E216a – Scatalogical Emergency

Brock gets into a predicament and can’t make it into the studio.  This is an explanation of the predicament.  What happens when you can’t find a bathroom?  And are there any lessons to be learned from such an experience?
note: those sensitive to conversation about bodily functions may wish to bypass this episode, as it contains many references to such.

E215 – Ed Hanna: The Leaving Is The Hardest Part

Ed Hanna was having beers at the Landmark Saloon in SE Portland, Oregon, when Brock locked up his bike in front of the place.  Ed asked him a few questions about his bike setup, and eventually they decided to share Ed’s European bicycle tour stories on the podcast.  Spoilers: it’s tricky getting started!

Also: Hi, Jason in Eugene who got Brock’s free bus tickets.  Brock breaks his grandpa’s tandem seat post, may or may not have used Uber, and has a scatalogical emergency. Aaron makes toaster granola.

E211 – Jeff Everett: The FBC, Y’all

Jeff Everett (the Jeff Everett) is a relatively new Portland resident, but he’s been coordinating bike fun for years.  We talk about his early life in the southern US states, the bicycling scene in St. Louis, Missouri, and his move to Spokane, Washington where he established the long-running FBC, a series of rides at night leading from bar to bar, and through some shenanigans.  Jeff also fearlessly disassembled our sound board before the show to fix an issue, like a champ.

Check out the great short form documentary about Spokane’s FBC, Keep It Simple, on Vimeo.

Also: Brock & Team Sincerity do Cranksgiving, and Aaron goes to see Cold Specks.

E208 – type 5 MAX car preview

Hey there folks!  So we promised you an episode, then we tried to record it and the forces of nature knocked out the power to our studio and sucked our first attempt into the abyss. Fortunately, I have all of this interview audio from my visit to the TriMet Type 5 rail car preview lying around, and I’d been meaning to get it out to you anyways.  So accept this rough sketch of a show as a token of our appreciation for you, the listener!  We’ll be back next week with the elements on our side.  Until then, cheers!  – Brock

E206 – Timo & Esther: Sweet Bike Love

Timo & Esther are established figures in the Portland transportation scene, Timo as a part of the Portland Bureau of Transportation & Esther with Sunday Parkways events. We chat with them about how bicycling (and breakfast on the bridges) brought them together, a bikey wedding near Silverton, OR, and a honeymoon of epic proportions through southern Europe!

Our musings on bicycle music brought these mentions: Johnnyrandom’s “Bespoken”, Frank Zappa, and the Portland Bike Ensemble.

Also: Brock rides through the hardest rain of the season to check out the new Type 5 MAX light rail cars, meets listener John from Maine; Aaron is off drugs! He also ran into Greg and Sarah from Funemployment Radio, who are having a live show soon.  TheTransportastic studio opener was awesome.

E205 – Transportastic Studio Opening Party Podcast LIVE

So now that we at Open Roads Broadcasting have a network of shows being produced around themes of bicycling, transport, and simpler living, we decided to throw a party at the Independent Publishing Resource Center to show off our new digs.  We recorded audio postcards (short interviews which you’ll hear included in future shows soon), posed in a photo booth that turns you into a crosswalk signal, played urban growth boundary twister, and recorded a live podcast for the crowd using hot-swappable show hosts!

Open Roads Broadcasting website coming soon!

Katie & David Proctor live in Portland without owning a car despite having children and enjoying outdoor recreation.  We ask why and how.
