E191 – Maria Schur’s Oregon Outback plus Brock and Adele week 1&2

Maria Schur’s second time on the show was a little difficult to get recorded. Scheduling conflicts abounded! Still, I felt it important, nay necessary, to get her story out for all of you to hear. In the end, I took a ride to her place with iPod in hand and sat down with her for some morning coffee and conversation.

Pictures!! I keep forgetting to take pictures. These next few shows may be semi-photoless. For what it’s worth, I did get a shot of the steed she rode through the Outback.

I dub this episode an “aaron light” episode. No mail or headlines this week, but I did insert Brock and Adele’s week 1 and 2 dispatches from the road.

Brandon Rhodes, besides being one of the show’s founding cohosts and an all-around good guy, is the proprietor of the new sustainable (and replicable) local produce delivery service Rolling Oasis.  He had a vision for a business that would connect his neighbors to healthier food options while he aimed to connect with his neighbors, and thus a great idea was born.  We get the skinny from him on how his model works and what it’s been like to launch the venture!  Steph Routh fills in as cohost in Aaron’s absence.

Christopher & Kelley of the Sunrise Coffee Club talk about early morning coffee-making rides, touring, and food, including eggnog!  Kelly brought cookies, too – and they were good.

Listeners Phoebe & Dave from Boston were also in the room and provided beverages!  Phoebe chips in on our discussion of hauling laptops by bike, and Dave adds to our consideration of plantains.

Cranksgiving Portland 2013 is an event happening at Velo Cult consisting of an alleycat race & a food drive for those in need!  We’ll have a little interview with Laura Recker who is coordinating this event in next week’s show.

Aaron & Brock discuss rides to restaurants around town, the anniversary of Montana’s statehood, and mystery rides.  Also, we were unusually plagued with microphone & cable malfunctions this episode! Sorry, and we’ll get on that to make it nicer in the future.

E134 – The Blounts Move to Portland

Joshua & Melissa Blount are recent transplants to Portland (and Cascadia) who are simplifying their daily rhythms of life and giving low-car life a fair shake.  We talk about their transition and their experiences with the new paradigm.  Joshua also podcasts atinternetpodcasts.com with three culture-related shows and documents their Portland move at joshplusmelissa.com with a video blog.

Melissa wanted to inform our listeners of an opportunity to support a local non-profit through a bicycle tour this summer. In July ten riders will pedal from Portland to Crater Lake and back to raise funds for The Cupcake Girls as part of the Sweet Ride Tour. Riders are attempting raise $10,000 to cover their costs and fund operations for The Cupcake Girls for six months. The Cupcake Girls bring resources, empowerment, and delicious cupcakes to men and women in the local adult entertainment industry. All donations are tax deductible.
Brock & Aaron also discuss moving by bike and a myriad of pedalpalooza rides, with shouts out to listeners we met on the rides: Max, Vince, Sarah, and Josh!

Piscataquis Village will be a European-styled, carless development in the US state of Maine, and the vision of Tracy Gayton who joins us for this show.  Tracy envisions a city with six key elements: small plazas, really narrow streets, attached buildings, arcaded sidewalks, interior courtyards and streets free from car traffic.  After it caught our attention, he was kind enough to supply us with a full rundown on how it might look.  [piscataquisvillage.org]  We also discuss comparisons to the Bicycle City idea, appealing to misanthropes, and how people might get to and from the village, as well as governmental red tape, bad weather, and Tracy’s own downsized life after retirement.

JohnnyK asks us where to put a sticker on a bicycle, and says that in Jacksonville a fellow cyclist is like “finding water in a desert.”  This makes the cycling traffic problems of Portland somewhat niche.

E087 – d’Arcy Lunn: Global Poverty Project

d’Arcy Lunn of the Global Poverty Project and the Live Below the Line challenge attempted a bicycle tour through the Pacific Northwest while living on the astounding figure of $1.50 USD per day.  At the end of this trip he dropped into our studio to chat about his experience and his ongoing work to bring awareness around poverty issues worldwide.
