E351 – Ryan & Val Go Bike Camping in CA

Brock met Ryan LaBarre at Velo Cult and they got to talking about bicycling and camping.  Ryan and Val Brown of The Om Cycle experimented with camping by bike in Santa Cruz, San Francisco & Napa Valley before moving to Portland and camping at Ainsworth State Park.  We talk about the experiences, what they learned, and what they want to do next!

Also: Brock & Adele ride the Steens Mountain area, and Aaron asks a question about road use.

E349 – The Ladd’s 500/Justin Patti’s Adventures

Brock & Aaron participated in The Ladd’s 500, arguably the stupidest bike event of the spring season.  And that’s why it’s so great!  Five hundred laps around a ⅕ mile circle, mostly by relay teams but also by a few individuals.  What happened?  All the stories, here.

Justin Patti is an acquaintance from Colorado who recently moved to Portland!  He’s a friend of former show guest The Professor, a bicycle enthusiast who once helped staff KRFC’s Bikes and Beer radio show, and he recently took a low-structure trip to have bicycling adventures in southern California.

E348 – Cat Goes For A Joyride

Cat Caparello radically changed her life through the Girl Eats Bike project, losing weight and leaning into a bicycling experience whether the world was ready for her to or not.  Now, she covers women in bicycling experiences, encouraging everyone to jump in and try it out; don’t wait for permission or for the imaging to change in the industry!  She hosts the Joyride Podcast which shares inspiring stories and conversation from interesting women involved in bicycling (including a show she just did with our best friend Aqua!), and you really should check it out.

Also Brock’s brother-in-law Phil is in town, and gives a short update on the nor’easter that just hit Boston.

E347b Ridealong: Chariot Wars 2017

A little bonus content – the Mini Bike Winter 2017 Chariot Wars!  We sent field correspondent Karah out to talk to people and get some audio of the glorious rage that comprises the event loved by many, feared by some, and even reviled by a few.  But most folks come out on the other side loving and respecting their friends even more.  Beating the shit out of your comrades has a strange bonding effect.

The Sprocket Podcast does not condone or endorse unpermitted or illegal activities of any kind.  You, as a grown adult, must navigate the labyrinthine web of life choices yourself.

E347 – SPRING BREAK

Brock & Aaron spent some time traveling!  Brock went to New Mexico and didn’t ride a bike.  Aaron went to Hawaii and rode a bike!  We talk about the trips and some thoughts on bicycling in Hawaii (and abroad in general), and the relative merits of standby travel.

E346b – LIVE announcement of the Oregon Timber Trail at Base Camp Brewing

Harry Dalgaard & Gabriel Amadeus present the first public announcement, explanation, and question/answer session of the Oregon Timber Trail, a new public route allowing people to cross the state of Oregon from south to north (or vice versa, weather conditions depending) by mountain bike or a number of other methods.  We were there and caught it on tape!  Thanks to Base Camp Brewing for hosting the event, filling its walls with perhaps more beards and cycling caps than ever!

E346 – Guthrie & Steph Fill In: Gabe & The Timber Trail

Filling in for Brock and Aaron are Guthrie and Steph for this episode!

Gabe Amadeus (of Limberlost) has been working hard for the past 18 months on one of Oregon’s most exciting biking routes: The Timber Trail. Stretching the length of Oregon, this trail represents the mountain biking equivalent of the P.C.T, in which cyclists can find challenges on four different sections of pristinely remote dirt, gravel, and singletrack. We catch up to Gabe to chat about his involvement with the project, and where the Timber Trail goes from here.

E345 – Megan Ramey from Bikabout

Megan Ramey had a vision to simplify the good trip.  Why fret over car rentals, unfamiliar expressways with angry drivers, and spend half of your time dreading the drives to come when you could explore cities the way they are best experienced – by bike?  She and her family have been living the dream for some time, guiding others into relaxing, human-scaled city tours with their travel guides, and getting there in style on Amtrak.  We get the skinny on Bikabout.

E344 – Ride With GPS, and with Kevin & Zack!

Ride With GPS is a fantastic tool for bicycle riders, designed by bicycle riders who code.  Kevin & Zack join us to explain how their new Ride Report function can provide expert, local opinions on the rides you have wanted to take, but weren’t sure if you should.  Their Ambassador program has been connecting people with information, too!  We are also joined by a bottle of whiskey, a mystery bag, and a hell of a lot of laughter.  Enjoy!
