E206 – Timo & Esther: Sweet Bike Love

Timo & Esther are established figures in the Portland transportation scene, Timo as a part of the Portland Bureau of Transportation & Esther with Sunday Parkways events. We chat with them about how bicycling (and breakfast on the bridges) brought them together, a bikey wedding near Silverton, OR, and a honeymoon of epic proportions through southern Europe!

Our musings on bicycle music brought these mentions: Johnnyrandom’s “Bespoken”, Frank Zappa, and the Portland Bike Ensemble.

Also: Brock rides through the hardest rain of the season to check out the new Type 5 MAX light rail cars, meets listener John from Maine; Aaron is off drugs! He also ran into Greg and Sarah from Funemployment Radio, who are having a live show soon.  TheTransportastic studio opener was awesome.

Dan Christensen shares this photo of a man’s recumbent bike/inflatable raft combo! The website Adventures of Greg is a human powered adventure log!

Dan in MN looks pretty damn awesome in his raingear.

E205 – Transportastic Studio Opening Party Podcast LIVE

So now that we at Open Roads Broadcasting have a network of shows being produced around themes of bicycling, transport, and simpler living, we decided to throw a party at the Independent Publishing Resource Center to show off our new digs.  We recorded audio postcards (short interviews which you’ll hear included in future shows soon), posed in a photo booth that turns you into a crosswalk signal, played urban growth boundary twister, and recorded a live podcast for the crowd using hot-swappable show hosts!

Open Roads Broadcasting website coming soon!

E203 – Olive & Dingo: Clowning Around

Dingo Dizmal & Olive Rootbeerare professional clowns in Portland and make entertainment and fun a lifestyle.  From days of yore to the present day, their distinctive style & bikes make them local icons and loved legends in bikey circles.  We chat about their cafe shows, clowning & its phobia, tallbikes and their occasional misappropriation, and how activism dovetails into everyday lifestyle habits. So much good stuff! I couldn’t edit it down. Settle in folks, it’s a long one.

Also: Brock gets hailed by a listener downtown, and Aaron gets a new patch on his jacket; the Transportastic studio opener is on 10/25 6:30pm at IPRC!

note: still ironing out the wrinkles of our new machine and the audio cuts to left-channel only in the last 10-15 minutes.

E202 – Aaron Hand & Raggy: Bike Polo

apparently neither host is excited to be in a photograph; extra points for our guests!

Aaron Hand & Raggy are bike polo enthusiasts in Portland whom we connected with through listener James.  They break down bike polo into its basics to help us understand how the game works, how it differs from traditional polo, how much fun it is, and how to get involved! Check out 3-2-1 Polo and League of Bike Polo.

Also: Aaron takes some drugs and trips balls, and Brock & Adele take some people bicycle camping in Cascade Locks.

Also: e200 live show! I swear this is the last we’ll talk about it, but Aaron Parecki made a sweet video.  Brock yells at brunch-going auto drivers, and Aaron hurts his back.

EXmas Special

Just two days back and Brock is going through some culture shock. My brother Dan is also in town, so the four of us – Adele, Brock, Dan, and myself – sit down to document this momentous occasion. As of today, Brock says he issues a blanket retraction of everything he said here, but also acknowledges the importance of publishing this record as a counter-balance the “sunshine and bunnies” sheen we are so often putting on this great great great awesome fun city.

I FUCKIN’ LOVE PORTLAND!! (af)

Dan’s legs hurt.

E190 – 2 of 3 Kell(e)ys, Hugh from SoCal, Where’s Coconut Bill?

Three guests in one show?!? Holy shit, I’m turning into a real host! This week we bring 2 of the three Kell(e)ys that have admitted to liking this podcast. They brought their friend Hugh from LA. Say what you want about those “California a-holes” (inside joke for you, Purple and Orange), but they get kudos from me for biking in a car-centric city-state. Here’s what Neighbor Kelley had to say about it:

“We sure know how to BS.  Thanks again for having us on! Here is Hugh’s blog: velocipedemusings. And since Flickr is what brought us together as friends and where we share our life and often bikey & hikey adventures, here are our Flickr pages: socalpedalpusher (Hugh)’s FlickrCoffee Kelley’s FlickrNeighbor Kelly’s Flickr

Also, those cookies….nom, nom, nom…so good :-)”
Yes, I’m not beneath bribing a potential with cookies.
But enough about the podcast. Listen for yourself.

Mail:

From: David N. in Portland, OR:
“Climber Kyle Dempster made a film called “The Road from Karakol” that is outstanding. His idea was to bike across Kazakstan from climbing spot to climbing spot, not the big destinations, just what he cod find on his biking route. He bought a $100 mountain bike off Craigslist and a used trailer and off he went. It’s pretty inspiring.”

From: Richard W. of suberbanassault.org suggests we use Patreon!

From: Anna O. from OK:
“As a bike shop employee this place sounds like paradise minus the cat hair.  Anyway the important thing to say here is you guys rock super hard and after I finish Bike School at UBI (Ashland campus) in August I’ll come bug ya.”

From brother Dan on the facebooks:
“Sulu was in Yellow also, Disney probably has a shadow profile in their databases containing fingerprints, several facial pictures, lists of who your family and friends are, email adresses, etc…”

From Johnny K in FLA:
“Okay I see now if you sit in the co-host chair you’re just lost.  Is that chair some kind of brain sucking device or what…”

Sara D in SF sends us a book and donation:
“I listen to the podcast while the girl I nanny takes a nap and I do laundry. I look forward to it every week. after seeing this book at her house I thought of you guys. Enjoy!”
