E232 – Brandon Rhodes, Mychal Tetteh, Scott Davison: Rolling Oasis Expansion

Brandon Rhodes is The Sprocket Podcast’s former cohost, and founder of the bicycle-based local organic produce delivery business Rolling Oasis Grocers.
Scott Davison createdVocoform, an organization that helps people with barriers to advancement find their calling in meaningful work, and powered the startup of Rolling Oasis.
Mychal Tetteh is CEO of theCommunity Cycling Center, a Portland nonprofit with the goal of “broadening access to bicycling and its benefits” that is partnering with Rolling Oasis to expand grocery delivery service to other Portland neighborhoods, particularly those with less access to affordable produce.

This week we discuss how to put the heart and soul back into local business to help people thrive.  Hint: It involves bicycles!  Find the Rolling Oasis Crowdfunding page here.

We’d like to welcome our new beverage sponsor, The Beer Mongers!  Many appreciations to Sean Campbell for keeping us socially lubricated.  And as always, thanks to our generous Patreon donors that keep us going!

E227b – Aaron Aaron Aaron Brock

Aaron Delani is a recent Portland inductee, taking the admonition of “welcome to Portland, now go ride your damn bike” very seriously.  As a webmaster, he codes in coffee shops, and then looks for places to explore and people to ride with.  We discuss his downsizing process as he moved here, a misjudgment of #coffeeoutside, and secret commuter racing, among many other things.  He’s at aarondelani.com

legal: “Are you able to get to all four counties for your job?” “Do you have reliable transportation?”
If they ask about reliable transportation; you say yes. If they ask for elaborate then you can say something like, “I prefer to travel by bike but have a Plan B in adverse weather conditions.”

Paul & Caroline Zavitkovski are perhaps the biking-est couple in Portland.  They had a bicycle honeymoon of epic proportions, transport their pug Rando in a specially built bicycle sidecar, and are cheerfully dialed into the bicycle culture here in town.  We discuss the best Pug ever, a bikey wedding, and a honeymoon across the northern tier of the continental US, including North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, & Maine.

E220b – Greg Hum: Drumbiker

Greg Hum is a drumbiker.  What is that, you ask? Well, take some rhythm and add it to your transportation.  That’s where it starts.  Brock speaks with him at his apartment in Cambridge, MA about sound and motion, bike fun, and the delicate line along which an event organizer walks when dealing with sensitive authority figures.  Watch his videos on YouTube, especially the film “Making a Splash in Miami” that he submitted to last year’s Filmed By Bike, and join in on the fun with Boston Bike Party if you’re near the Boston area!

We mention Portland buckets ‘n slide blues band Hillstomp, who also make use of buckets (and are one of Brock’s favorite bands).  Here’s the death metal washing machine, too, and the video where metal music was paired with the sound.

Ed Hanna was having beers at the Landmark Saloon in SE Portland, Oregon, when Brock locked up his bike in front of the place.  Ed asked him a few questions about his bike setup, and eventually they decided to share Ed’s European bicycle tour stories on the podcast.  Spoilers: it’s tricky getting started!

Also: Hi, Jason in Eugene who got Brock’s free bus tickets.  Brock breaks his grandpa’s tandem seat post, may or may not have used Uber, and has a scatalogical emergency. Aaron makes toaster granola.

E209 – Daniel Harkins: Feats of Strength (with Nathan Jones)

Daniel Harkins, as the muscle of Team Sincerity, is a certifiable badass due to his many feats of strength.  He is the only person we’ve met who once commuted 65 miles in the snow by bike, has completed many adventurous bicycle tours with a bit of stealth camping, and is also a member of the National Guard.  He tells us what it takes to be awesome no matter where you are.

We’re also joined by another certifiable badass who’s no stranger to feats of strength himself: Nathan Jones of Portland bicycle shop Ride Yr Bike and the TransAm Bike Race.

A great resource for people on bikes in Oregon is Ride Oregon Ride.

Also: Nathan Jones had a burger jump BBQ, and Brock had some issues with a U-lock, and Minnesota Public Radio’s Pedal Hub is a fantastic show!
