E382 – Lillian’s Finances & Felines

Lillian Karabaic is a good friend of the show, and has been on many times in the past, but today she brings something new: “purr-sonal” finance!  Her new project, Get Your Money Together, aims to knock down the difficulties standing between the average person’s goals of savings and affording the things they need in their lives.  She also fills us in on a recent train journey across Europe & Asia, ending in Siberia.  Follow Lily’s regularly release personal finance podcast at Oh My Dollar.

As always, Thank you to our drink sponsor The Beer Mongers for providing libations and to all of our Patreon donors who keep us going.

E374 – Biketalk 88.1 & Bikabout

Galen Mook & Jess “DJ Hot Mic” are hosts on Cambridge’s BikeTalk 88.1, a live radio show broadcasting every other Wednesday at 8pm EST on FM & web.  They’ve been visiting Oregon’s prime locations including Bend, Hood River, & Portland.  Small catch: it’s been really smoky here due to some cataclysmic wildfires – they haven’t seen any mountains yet.  Enter Bikabout.com: their friends Megan (who’s been on the show before) and Kyle Ramey got out of dodge for awhile to avoid the smoke from the Eagle Creek Fire, and dropped into the studio as well.  We catch up with them and find out what’s next for the bicycle travel guide website and the people behind it.

(if you missed the BikeTalk 88.1 episodes Brock was on, hear them: in studio on bike fun, and call-in about 2017 Biketown vandalism)

E371 – Brad from Newfoundland

Brad Wade is a cross-country bicycle tourist from Newfoundland, and he is unique in his physiology: his heart is located in a different part of his body than most people’s, and only has one functional lung.  That hasn’t stopped him from adventuring!  We chat with him near the end of his trip about his experiences, health, food access, and (of course) his gear.  Aaron Green, author of We Were Like Sons and founder of The Regrainery, joined us in this conversation.

E363 Peter Koonce Talks Dutch Infra

Peter Koonce manages the City of Portland Bureau of Transportation’s Signals, Street Lighting, & ITS Division. Today, however, he regales us with tales of biking in every Cyclist-American’s go-to country for arguing infrastructure.

Yes, that’s right, we talk about biking in the Netherlands. Specifically, Delpht, NOT Amsterdam.

E345 – Megan Ramey from Bikabout

Megan Ramey had a vision to simplify the good trip.  Why fret over car rentals, unfamiliar expressways with angry drivers, and spend half of your time dreading the drives to come when you could explore cities the way they are best experienced – by bike?  She and her family have been living the dream for some time, guiding others into relaxing, human-scaled city tours with their travel guides, and getting there in style on Amtrak.  We get the skinny on Bikabout.

Also: Aaron hauled some sound gear around thanks to Clever Cycles, went to The Beer Mongers, and hung out with his brother Dan, and Brock biked to a crawfish festival.  We also mention vintage utopian novel Ecotopia and the new Joyride podcast.

Madi Carlson is the author of Urban Cycling and the @familyride twitter feed.  She decided to do a long ride with the assistance of her friend Fat Rob from Seattle to Portland!  Aaron met them in Woodland, WA and ushered them back into our town.  Their friend, and ours, Shawn Granton of the Urban Adventure League, also joins to talk routes and tips on long rides.

E300 – THE BIG ONE

Well, this is it.  We made it to 300 episodes, and, rather than go big with a live event like we have for previous milestone episodes, we decided to go small and dive into our own internal process on bicycling, the simpler life, and our relationship with you, the listener. Brock & Aaron do a little intro banter, and then both of us recorded monologues that we hope are enlightening, encouraging, and express our grateful attitude toward your repeat visits to our little show every week.

Thanks so much for listening! We wouldn’t be here without you.

also: Brock hiked in central Oregon and tried to help a phoneless guy, and Aaron saw lifetime bicycle tourist Heinz Stucke.  Look for audio from his appearance atClever Cycles in our feed soon!
