E364 – Rob Asks Questions

Rob Sadowsky worked in Portland bicycle advocacy for a long time; long enough to have some questions about how life works in this town.  We talk about change, will & apathy, the new bike tax (of course), nonprofits & government, and what it’s like to be be unemployed/underemployed.  Questions can find answers!

Also: Brock had some adventures around town and Guthrie made unexpected bicycle world connections at a potluck.

E363 Peter Koonce Talks Dutch Infra

Peter Koonce manages the City of Portland Bureau of Transportation’s Signals, Street Lighting, & ITS Division. Today, however, he regales us with tales of biking in every Cyclist-American’s go-to country for arguing infrastructure.

Yes, that’s right, we talk about biking in the Netherlands. Specifically, Delpht, NOT Amsterdam.

damn! I forgot to get a photo.

And as always thanks to the Beer Mongers for providing our tasty beverages

Speaking of The Beer Mongers… (from the Willamette Week)
A Local Business Totally Trolled Willamette Week—And It Was Awesome
BeerMongers twisted the WW logo and printed it on shirts

BeerMongers decided to have a little fun at our expense, twisting the WW logo into a BM logo and printing our criticism (“Right breweries. Wrong beers.”) on the back. We were both chastened and honored. The mark of a truly great trolling.

E362 Matthew Mendez Give Them Bikes! Chain Reaction(s)

Guthrie and Aaron talk with Matthew, the man behind Chain Reaction (singular) and Give Them Bikes! “What are those?” Listen and find out.

Also, Aaron passes on a call from his middle niece, but calls her back because Aaron is weirdly committed to the things he says on twitter.

E360 – Bryce & Bean Can Take The Heat

Bryce & Bean are relatively new transplants to Portland, but they’re probably taking the summer temperatures better than we are.  Living in Tucson, Arizona gave them plenty of experience in beating the heat and riding bikes in it.  Bryce works for Velo Cult as one of their shop staff after having a “come to bicycles” moment, and Bean spent a lot of time in a bakery with the cool bike kids of the Southwest. We talk about life there and here, and what’s next for the two of them.

Also: Brock did the WNBR, and Aaron did not, no buts about it. Aaron built 2 bikes in one day.

E354 – Ayleen Takes Filmed By Bike On The Road

Filmed By Bike is a Portland cultural institution that has gone from humble beginnings to its present home at the Hollywood Theater – and your town’s most suitable venue!  We chat with festival founder Ayleen Crotty (likely a member of the 5 timers’ club, though we forgot to count) about this year’s events and how this year’s batch of films could play anywhere there is demand for them as she facilitates gatherings with the same content as the flagship event in new cities around the world.  Check out the info on the webpage to get Filmed By Bike booked for your area!  And we are joined by #MascotOtis.

Also: Aaron orders some bike parts and Brock reads the fine print on his credit card’s car rental insurance coverage.

E353 – Tori Bortman: The Legend

Tori Bortman!  We should have had her on years ago.  She is one of the senior hosts on the KBOO Bike Show, teacher of mechanics and skills at Gracie’s Wrench, author of The Bicycling Big Book of Cycling for Beginners: Everything a new rider needs to know to gear up and start riding; on top of this, she is a delightful conversationalist.  We get to know the legend in person, discussing Portland’s vegan heritage sites, Christian rock music, radio, music, wrenching and teaching people to ride, and much more!

E352 – Andrea & David on Equity In The Bike Shop

The Community Cycling Center offers bicycles & service to people who might otherwise experience barriers to access.  Andrea Chiotti is the bridge between the shop & the office and cares a lot about engaging youth in mechanical skills. David Kurushima recently moved on to other things but appeared on our show before as their shop’s retail manager.  We have a lively discussion about access, privilege, and apprenticeship.

E348 – Cat Goes For A Joyride

Cat Caparello radically changed her life through the Girl Eats Bike project, losing weight and leaning into a bicycling experience whether the world was ready for her to or not.  Now, she covers women in bicycling experiences, encouraging everyone to jump in and try it out; don’t wait for permission or for the imaging to change in the industry!  She hosts the Joyride Podcast which shares inspiring stories and conversation from interesting women involved in bicycling (including a show she just did with our best friend Aqua!), and you really should check it out.

E346b – LIVE announcement of the Oregon Timber Trail at Base Camp Brewing

Harry Dalgaard & Gabriel Amadeus present the first public announcement, explanation, and question/answer session of the Oregon Timber Trail, a new public route allowing people to cross the state of Oregon from south to north (or vice versa, weather conditions depending) by mountain bike or a number of other methods.  We were there and caught it on tape!  Thanks to Base Camp Brewing for hosting the event, filling its walls with perhaps more beards and cycling caps than ever!
