E549 – Shawne Martinez will @RescueEwe

Whoa! Check out that helmet cam!
Shawne Martinez joined us on the show to talk about cargo bikes, riding in Washington county and benefits of electrical assist motors!  Follow Shawne on twitter at @RescueEwe

Also, as always, thanks to our nationally recognized “top beer bar in Oregon” beverage sponsor, The Beer Mongers on SE12th and Division, now open for more than 4,000 days consecutively. They have a patio outside the place and, if you’re lucky, you might be able to catch some sports with sound.  The big stick remains indoor on the ceiling.  And, as always, thanks to our generous Patreon donors that keep us going!

WINTER BIKE LIGHTS
We are keeping the calendar on hiatus for now, but please do take some photos of how you are lighting your bike this winter. In line with local laws and regulations, we encourage you to add some more festive lights. If you do, take a photo, and share it with us on any of our social media, on Facebook at Sprocket Podcast, or Twitter or Instagram @SprocketPodcast and use the hashtag #sprocketwinterbike. Bring a bit of cheer to our days without much daylight.
of course we encourage you to follow any and all locally applicable regulations when riding your bicycle on public roadways.

E536b – REBROADCAST E317 in memoriam to Dan Gebhart

this week we’re sharing a portion of an episode recorded with Dan Gebhart (who’s a time traveler) in his memory.  The Portland bicycle community lost Dan on September 22 according to an article on BikePortland.org, and we will miss him dearly.  A ride in remembrance is planned for him on Sunday, October 18 at 2pm starting at the Mt. Scott Community Center.

Soren Impey & Dan Gebhart are involved with Bike Loud PDX and drop in to explain why streets don’t have to be dangerous to work, and what their organization is doing to catch the attention of Oregon’s legislators.  They’re riding from Portland to Salem to make their voices heard!

E529 – Chris Smith: 6th Appearance, 2nd Round for Elections

Chris Smith is still our choice for the Oregon tri-county regional government election for Metro Councilor this fall (we spoke with him last on episode 505), and he rejoins us to explain his platform particulars at this stage of the process.  He talks about the primary election results from earlier in the year, compares to an opponent in the race, talks a little about the transportation measure that will be on the ballot, and lets us know how we can help! Find more: chrisformetro.com

Follow this link to make a donation to Chris’ campaign if you’re able – money talks, and if you want to see thoughtful, equitable change in a major city, your gift will make his voice heard.

Also: after the show, cohost Guthrie Straw gives some updates from his self-supported bicycle tour across the state.

E505 – Chris For Metro!

Chris Smith is a favorite repeat guest, and while we know he’s an incredibly smart guy, the general public is about to learn how much he can help the Portland region!  Chris is tossing his hat into the ring in the upcoming May election for Metro Councilor in the regional government that helps to regulate transportation, housing, and environmental matter, among other things. There are some times when it feels good to be an independent platform, and we are excited to endorse him as the best choice for the job.  Listen to our chat with him here, read the great recent BikePortland article about his campaign, and visit chrisformetro.com to dive into supporting him!

E492 – How Oregon Got The Idaho Stop Law with Ray & Bjorn

Bjorn Warloe & Ray Thomas both worked on some very important legislation here in Oregon, and they return to the studio (graciously, after attempting a recording a few weeks ago that got dumped by a bad machine) to discuss pitching legislative concepts, persistence, and timing.  The “Idaho Stop Law” allowing bicycle riders to proceed without stopping through a signed intersection was passed in Oregon this year, and will take effect soon!

E434 – Darius from Omni: Sharing Stuff

Darius is working with a new way to share your things, and keep them too! Omni started as a storage option for people’s extra stuff, but now is also working to find people who want to rent the objects you think are cool, but don’t use all the time; they’re described as “an on-demand access company for things you don’t use every day, but can’t live without” That margarita mixer & those snowboarding pants just sit unused most of the time, why not put them to work earning money for you and making someone else’s life more interesting, while retaining access whenever you need them?  “Rent what you want now, store what you’ll want later.”  Omni just launched in Portland; Darius breaks it down for us.

Also, Aaron celebrates an anniversary & Brock rents a car.  After the regular segments Brock laments the end of his regular cohosting duties & they both bag on Dave Matthews.
