E349 – The Ladd’s 500/Justin Patti’s Adventures

Brock & Aaron participated in The Ladd’s 500, arguably the stupidest bike event of the spring season.  And that’s why it’s so great!  Five hundred laps around a ⅕ mile circle, mostly by relay teams but also by a few individuals.  What happened?  All the stories, here.

Justin Patti is an acquaintance from Colorado who recently moved to Portland!  He’s a friend of former show guest The Professor, a bicycle enthusiast who once helped staff KRFC’s Bikes and Beer radio show, and he recently took a low-structure trip to have bicycling adventures in southern California.

E346b – LIVE announcement of the Oregon Timber Trail at Base Camp Brewing

Harry Dalgaard & Gabriel Amadeus present the first public announcement, explanation, and question/answer session of the Oregon Timber Trail, a new public route allowing people to cross the state of Oregon from south to north (or vice versa, weather conditions depending) by mountain bike or a number of other methods.  We were there and caught it on tape!  Thanks to Base Camp Brewing for hosting the event, filling its walls with perhaps more beards and cycling caps than ever!

E319 – Fresh Hops, Fresh Dudes

What kind of dudes? Eric Iverson regales us with tales of a 24 hour bicycle relay in Minneapolis, and Ross Putnam illustrates how great a trip to pick up fresh hops for Base Camp Brewing by cargo bike can be! Trust us, these guys are super cool.

E316 – Steve Banfield’s New Take on Carsharing

Steve Banfield is the man leading ReachNow out of the planning room and into the future to provide a new take on point-to-point car rentals, and it turns out it’s an approach that is not only smart, but also promises to be classy, easy, spacious, benevolent, and perhaps even someday autonomous!  We chat about the fleet of BMW and Mini vehicles that will be rolling out in Portland this week, how they can help meet the transport needs of low-car lifestyles, and what it’s like to take your mom to the top of the Space Needle.  “Free-floating car share” for the win!

E310 – The Steens Mazama 1000

Maria Schur & David Barstow Robinson both rode their bicycles from Portland to the other corner of the state, and up to the top of the two highest peaks in that state.  They were among several other racers that completed the unsupported Steens Mazama 1000 tour through incredibly steep hills, barren wildlands, and comforting tiny towns in rural Oregon.  We talk about both of their approaches to the challenge and how each of them found a way through to victory.  Find Maria’s write-up of the trip here.

Also: Brock and Aaron do some driving, separately.

E304 – Will Has New Rain Barrels

Will Vanlue is back! With new tales of rain barrels and riding bikes with his son! He breaks down what’s great about low-car life in a family context, recaps his fascinating rain barrel system described in episode 236 and describes the upgrade that he recently installed!  Resilience is strong with this one.

Will recommends Green Concepts Container as a resource for clean, safe barrels.
Here’s the link to the City of Portland’s (surprisingly useful) rain barrel guide:

E299 – David Goes Places

David Robinson helped a bunch of people enjoy a Saturday by making them ride in circles (i.e. The Ladd’s 500) and also had a hell of a time riding his bike through the woods (the Venersborg 200).  Such adventures bear repeating for our benefit!
