E322 – The Greens Go West Coast Bicycle Touring!

Aaron Green is an experienced tourist-by-bike who wrote the memoir We Were Like Sons. Jada Green married a celebrity and got to bring her dream of bicycle touring the west coast to life!  This fall the magnanimous couple rode from Portland, Oregon to San Diego, California.  We chat with them about early mechanicals, transit use in San Simeon, amazing food experiences, meeting other tourists, and chatting with a disgruntled driver, among other things!

E314 – Dr. David Howell Thinks While He Rides

Dr. David Howell teaches ethics in Wisconsin, and needed time to work out a “problem of scale” (i.e. a big conundrum).  What better way to get some time to think and write than to ride your bicycle from Washington state back to home?  He authored the book “The Descent Into Happiness” while riding across vast, beautiful, empty landscapes that gave him the space he needed to ride more slowly, think deeper thoughts, and enjoy a few beers along the way.  We dig in for the deep stuff!  Oh, did we mention he’s a listener, too?  He kindly name-checks the podcast in the book!

Adele drops in as a fan of the book to fill in as cohost in Aaron’s absence, and shares a few experiences from her recent solo double century tour.

E313 – Michael & Tim Talk Touring

Show favorite Tim Mooney of the Pedalshift project and its, like, 7 podcasts, rejoins us to kick off his Oregon coastal bicycle tour, and to introduce us to our new friend Michael Riscica of Coast2Coast Bike Ride, a repository of knowledge, advice, and experiences gleaned from his three cross-continental bicycle tours, including the one in which he moved across the country and only had one small box of things mailed to him at the end.  Badass, right?  And he has a cool robot logo.

E312 – Brittany Rides to Work (with special guest Dan Flores)

We chat with our friend Brittany about what it’s like to be a bicycle commuter in Portland, Oregon, even if you don’t go on a lot of special group rides or events.  What are the streets like? How do they facilitate a healthy existence in the city?  Also, we chat about some math and hair concepts.

And it’s the return of crowd favorite Dan Flores!

E310b – more SM1K talk

Maria & David stayed around after we wrapped the show on the Steens Mazama 1000, and we ended up talking about the ride for 45 more minutes!  Even more detail on how fun AND painful the experience was.

E310 – The Steens Mazama 1000

Maria Schur & David Barstow Robinson both rode their bicycles from Portland to the other corner of the state, and up to the top of the two highest peaks in that state.  They were among several other racers that completed the unsupported Steens Mazama 1000 tour through incredibly steep hills, barren wildlands, and comforting tiny towns in rural Oregon.  We talk about both of their approaches to the challenge and how each of them found a way through to victory.  Find Maria’s write-up of the trip here.

Also: Brock and Aaron do some driving, separately.
