WINTER BIKE LIGHTS
We are pausing the calendar til things are a bit safer, and we don’t have any mail this week. But! We do have something fun. With the pandemic and lack of social outings, winter is looking a bit bleak, so we are asking listeners to decorate your bikes with any extra fun lights, take a photo, and share it with us on any of our social media. Bring a bit of cheer to our days without much daylight. Use the hashtag #sprocketwinterbike

E539 – Tom’s Cargo Bikes E058 REDUX

This week’s episode combines an interview from 2011 with bike builder Tom, who used to run Tom’s Cargo Bikes, and a few conversations with EJ & Eric, previous owners of his craftsmanship from 2020.  Producer Brock currently owns and rides #53 (lamplighter tall) & #95 (EJ’s bakfiets).  Eric’s cargo swingbike is currently in the custody of the Corvidae Bicycle Club.
We’re looking forward to bringing you another new studio show soon!

Tom’s Cargo Bikes built all kinds of conveyances from repurposed bicycle frames in style and with finesse.  Tom gave us the rundown on how he got into this pastime, how he cut his chops on the skills necessary, and what he’s done with the bikes he builds. His website is no longer active, but you can follow the hashtag #tomscargobikes to see some of the bikes out in the world, and view many of his creations on his Flickr page.

We discussed individual builds, growing up in Montana and fixing up muscle cars, moving to the city and getting out of regular car use, massive snowstorms, cargo bikes at Alaska Air, learning the terminology, 50 bikes built, Spin Art Bike, Yolo Colorhouse, blender bike, the Xtracycle,Multnomah County Bike FairBikes for Humanitybake feets, proprietary steering systems, “it’s all in beta,” marshmallow roasting, bass player uses cargo bike, Dutch sperm cargo bike, an unwitting bidding war, Tom’s Portland hotel bike serves beer & coffee, and environmental pragmatism.

Harry Hugel is a listener who is the weekend guy at Rivendell Bicycles (though they are closed on weekends for now), a big coffee fan, and likes to get out on a ramble in the hills from time to time.  Brock & Armando talk with Harry about his time listening to the show, his experience on the bike, and whether guys with head colds are jerks.

E536b – REBROADCAST E317 in memoriam to Dan Gebhart

this week we’re sharing a portion of an episode recorded with Dan Gebhart (who’s a time traveler) in his memory.  The Portland bicycle community lost Dan on September 22 according to an article on BikePortland.org, and we will miss him dearly.  A ride in remembrance is planned for him on Sunday, October 18 at 2pm starting at the Mt. Scott Community Center.

Soren Impey & Dan Gebhart are involved with Bike Loud PDX and drop in to explain why streets don’t have to be dangerous to work, and what their organization is doing to catch the attention of Oregon’s legislators.  They’re riding from Portland to Salem to make their voices heard!
