E394 – Joan By Bike

Joan Petit is a librarian, engaged citizen, adoptive mother AND a bicyclist.  We chat with her about the downsides of gentrification and freeway expansion (a bad idea), and then move on tn bike lighting and its rigorous standards in Germany.  We obviously need to have her back for another episode.

Also, Guthrie & Aaron discuss the new year, and they tell the story of how Anna became a stolen bicycle retrieving superhero!

E392 – Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race

Happy Holidays, all you Sprocket Podcast devotees! Or, as these socks suggest, happy Challah Days if that is appropriate to your observance.

Brock went to Boston as is his custom for the Christmas season, and while there he spoke with Michael & Bianca of the Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race, an amazing feat of engineering and teamwork that sees groups compete with homemade human-powered machines through obstacles such as a river and a mud pit.  Listen to our interview conducted in the back office of a seasonal skating rink!

The Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race happens every third Saturday in September EVERY YEAR, so get your team together and your machine engineered!

E383 – BAE BAE PDX!

Bike Angels Exist, Burn All Evidence!

BAE BAE is a mostly-female bike club in Portland, OR. We speak to Holly & Laurel about fun, on-time departures and rain, amongst other things. They describe their group this way:
“We are building the bike scene we want to be part of – one that is fun, challenging, and exciting while also being safe and supportive. We tolerate exactly zero sexist bullshit. We are not about speed or competition or snobbery; we are just a bunch of badass people who love bikes and are all about empowering each other, especially with regard to getting butts on bikes.”

E381 – Nathan Jones Races Around Earth

Nathan Jones hasn’t been on the show in a while, and that’s because he’s been busy riding 18,000 miles around the planet.  This weekend he gave a presentation at Bike Gallery’s Westmoreland location about the whole trip, including passage through monastery-filled eastern Europe, assembling a bike alone at 4am in an Indian airport, viewing a piece of Skylab at a truck stop in Australia, and letting the wind blow him around for a while in America’s heartland.  He also discussed Mike Hall’s legacy and how he carried Mike’s bicycle tire pump the entire way.  We’re sharing audio from the entire 2 hour presentation here!

Thanks to Bike Gallery Westmoreland for hosting this event!  Visit their new location at 6717 SE Milwaukie Ave, Portland, OR 97202.
