E520 – Kurstin Graham from the Reno Bike Project

Kurstin Graham is the author of bikepackingnv.blog and has spent a lot of time helping others find adventure in northern Nevada.  He recently took a bikefishing trip in the Toiyabe Range, among other adventures.  He’s also involved with the Reno Bike Project, which repurposes abandoned bikes following the Burning Man festival, and has spent some time working with the Tahoe to Pyramid Lake Trail – a significant undertaking which runs 117 miles from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake (the Lake being within tribal lands). We’re grateful for the chance to hear about all of these projects, and grateful to Sebastien Poule for connecting us.

E519 – ᐸᐠᐊᐧᒋᓂᓂ (bugwajiniinii, or Dan in MN)

ᐸᐠᐊᐧᒋᓂᓂ (“bugwajiniinii”, or Dan) has been with The Sprocket Podcast since its beginning, and has years of experience in bicycle maintenance, riding, instruction, advocacy with Bike Bemidji, and coffee outside.  We had the pleasure to ask him about his experiences and perspective as an enrolled member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe as we spoke with him for this recording – he in his hand-built tiny house and we in our respective locations.  We also briefly addressed #boatmonth.  Follow his adventures and projects on Instagram at @bugwajiniinii.

E518 – SprocketShift Draft 2020

We joined Tim at the Pedalshift Project for an edition of his Bicycle Tour Draft, a “fantasy draft pick” exercise in which we assemble our hypothetical gear for a hypothetical tour.  As with any fantasy sport, the competition can get heated, and small things turn into big things!

Cast your vote for the winner – Tim says:
“Winner will be determined by fancy RANKED CHOICE VOTING, a super cool and superior way to vote. Click here to rank your top 4 (just drag and drop the names in order) and the winner is crowned! We’ll tally results at midnight on July 1st.  Again… you have the rest of June eastern time to vote… who has the better tour setup?”

E516 – Sebastièn Poule!

Image from page 62 of “Wheels and wheeling; an indispensable handbook for cyclists, with over two hundred illustrations” (1892)

We speak with long-time listener, donor, and friend of the show Sebastièn Poule about his experiences with bicycling and mechanics in Sonoma County, and a little about public land and wildlife encounters!  He’s the one who founded the Sprocket Podcast Strava Club, gave us our podcast logo mugs, contributed many comments and emails, and is an all-around fun person to talk to.

Been following the show long?  This could be your chance to put your voice into the conversation – with all of the remote interviews we’ve been recording, there’s no better time to share your experiences and stories with us!  Be in touch!

E515 – Keith rides the Indy Underground

It’s a good time to reach out to our long-time donors and friends of the show – quarantining ourselves from our studio and our usual in-person interviews opens up the opportunity to connect with folks who have been with us for awhile.  Today: Keith Hutchison, listener and supporter from Indianapolis, who’s an instigator in the city’s bike fun scene when he’s not exploring unpaved and hidden scenes of the city to check out birds and secret graffiti galleries.  Check out Keith’s instagram and follow events through GentleFolks Bicycle Riding and Exploration Society of Indianapolis or Bike Party Indianapolis!

E513 – Tim Mooney, not touring, and SprocketShift Happy Hour #5 SCHOOL NIGHT

Tim Mooney joins us as a perennial friend of the show and, of course, host of Pedalshift, the definitely best show on the internet about bicycle touring!  He recently completed a “wilderness style” no-contact tour of the C & O Trail near Washington, DC before the campsites were closed, and ruminates with us on the future of bicycle touring after a global pandemic affects us all.

We also present as the second half of this episode the SprocketShift Happy Hour #5 we conducted together right after taping the show, talking about how we’re spending our “school nights.”
