E293 – Humanity On Wheels 3: An Evening of Transit Tales

Kick Ass Oregon History and TriMet Diaries are proud to announce our third installment of Portland Mass Transit Stories, which we are calling “Humanity on Wheels 3!” Previously labeled “TriMet’s Woodstock,” this live story telling event took place on April 5th, 2016 at The Jack London Bar.
Selected story tellers opened the evening. Dan Christensen, William Reagan, Aaron Flores, Dr. Jeff and Heather Goguen all shared stories of riding TriMet. Then, the master of ceremonies, KAOH’s Doug Kenck-Crispin introduced an Open Mic section of the program, where audience members shared their own Portland Mass Transit stories!
For the audience’s enjoyment, we also offered musical interludes provided by Dr. Something (who’s songs include “Beaverton TC” and “Shitsplosion at the Lloyd Center Macy’s”). AND we enjoyed viewing vintage TriMet training films and advertisements that we obtained from the agency’s archives!
A big thank you to Heather Goguen for the graphic design! AND to Matthew Cowan at the Oregon Historical Society for assisting with the vintage film transfer.
This episode’s music was provided by Seattle band Explone.  The Ballad of Murtzuphlus is available in its entirety on bandcamp.
Thanks to ghost host Andy Lindberg for voicing this week’s introduction!

E290b – Chris Glasser: Bicycling For Louisville

Brock went to Louisville, Kentucky for work, but ended up getting a chance to chat with Chris Glasser from Bicycling for Louisville about what he likes about Portland, Boston, and, of course, Louisville.  Their chat on the eighth floor of the Galt House Hotel, overlooking the expansive parking garage of a certain sports stadium, is presented here!  Thanks to Chris for joining the show’s roster, and for forgiving our ignorance of his position in the local advocacy scene.  He’s a good guy!

E285 – Chris Smith & Rob Sadowsky: Public Process Needs You!

Chris Smith is a tireless advocate for the public process and works for positive change in active transportation policy.  He describes himself as a citizen activistand is a member of the Portland Planning and Sustainability Commission.  Rob Sadowsky is the executive director of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance.  Steph Routh is the former executive director of Oregon Walks and currently helms theWhy Isn’t Anyone Talking About This? podcast.

Important plans are being laid for the future of Portland, Oregon’s transportation options.  Chris asked to share how everyone can be involved in the process!  There are three different but closely related planning projects that affect cycling and transportation in Portland:

1: The Comprehensive Plan, at City Council now. Contains key policies (i.e., green transportation hierarchy) and the Transportation System Plan project list identifying spending priorities for the next 20 years. The next public testimony opportunity (intended to focus on amendments proposed by City Council are) :

Comprehensive Plan Hearing on Amendments
City Hall Council Chambers 1221 SW 4th Ave
Thursday, April 14 2016, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM

2) Transportation System Plan (TSP)  Contains additional transportation policies and in particular, integrates the bicycle classifications from the Bicycle Master Plan into the TSP for the first time.  There are two hearings coming up at the Planning and Sustainability Commission on the TSP in March:

PSC Hearing on TSP
Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, 2500 SW 4th Ave
Tuesday, March 8th (meeting as 12:30pm, agenda item time TBD)

PSC Hearing on TSP
Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, 2500 SW 4th Ave
Tuesday, March 22th (meeting as 5pm, agenda item time TBD)

3) Central City Plan (CC2035)  Just to make life interesting, the street classifications (including bicycle classifications) for the Central City are not in the TSP, they’re in the Central City Plan, which is following in the process a bit (it will be the first amendment to the Comp Plan).

This plan integrates the three (we can’t count) Quadrant Plans developed over the last few years into one unified plan for the Central City. Staff has just released the discussion draft and there are a number of open houses and drop-in events coming up.

E283 – Carl Larson’s Retirement

Carl Larson is the chancellor of bike fun. He’s been a tireless defender of many expressions of how bikes are the most enjoyable way to move around town, and will soon be a resident of another metropolis. We talk about his memories of good times, how he views both advocacy and activism, some interesting run-ins during the Zoobomb, and what comes next.
Here’s the Portland Police training video Carl mentioned!

Also: Brock finally figured out who he passes on his morning commute, and went camping in the rain, and Aaron did some rad climbs, and he forgot he was recording a show.

correction: his name is Ted, but he did the Mont Ventoux & Club des Cingles du Mont-Ventoux ride!

E279 – Joe Biel: Good Trouble

Joe Biel has been running Microcosm Publishing, an independent book and ‘zine publishing organization, for twenty years in many locations and iterations, starting with a milk crate he took to music venues that hosted punk shows.  Now he has released his memoir, Good Trouble, about his experience building that history and how it was influenced by his adult diagnosis with Asperger’s Syndrome.  We’re glad he’s kept at it, and joined him at his house to chat about his perspective on the world through the lens of simpler living!

Several anniversary events for Microcosm are planned – a reading on February 11 2016 at Powell’s Books on Hawthorne (Joe’s guest post on their blog here, too!) anda party at Velo Cult Bike Shop & Tavern on February 12 2016!
