E261a REBROADCAST – Grilled By Bike does the Oregon Outback

Team Grilled By Bike.  The Oregon Outback.  What more needs to be said? Eric, JP, Eilif, & Ross party responsibly across the uninhabited lands of eastern Oregon, encountering mud, rain, fallen trees, and windfall burn barrels, while engaging in the throwing of sharp implements and the playing of table tennis.  How did it go down? They tell us.

Find Grilled By Bike on instagram.

For field audio of the adventure produced by Eric Ivy, listen to:
E261b Pt.1 Team Grilled By Bike: Exploring Unsharted Territory – The intrepid crew rides out of Klamath, plays some ping pong, watches a thunderstorm, chops down trees, interviews other bikepackers, and hangs out in a bike shop.
E261c – Pt.2 Team Grilled By Bike: Exploring Unsharted Territory – The crew interviews a long-time bikepacker, plays some more ping pong, throws the tomahawk, hangs around a campfire with some other Outback riders, and makes banana boats.
E261d – Pt.3 Team Grilled By Bike: Exploring Unsharted Territory – The crew eats all the queso, finds the endpoint at the Columbia River, talks to more bikepackers, makes camp one last time, and Eric returns to Portland with the record button still activated to talk to even more people.

Brock & Brandon celebrate 100 episodes of the Sprocket Podcast by traversing the city for hours using every mode of transport they can get into, including TriMet, the Portland Streetcar, the Portland Aerial Tram, and of course Car2Go.  Here’s a “lite” version of the 5 hours of audio we taped during the adventure.

Aaron broke some bone.  Guthrie heads over to his house to tape this week’s episode!  Recorded at chateau de Aaron, so expect some room tone in the audio this week.  We all wish Aaron the best in his recovery and mending, and get into some of the dynamics of commuting in weather.

Re: EP492 (How Oregon Got The Idaho Stop Law with Ray & Bjorn)

“I’m not sure about Oregon laws but they sure are different in Texas. We have nothing in our laws about impeding speed. Basically, if the lane is larger than 14” (I think), you have to ride as far to the right as practicable (which is subjective with debris and cracks). If the lane is smaller than 14”, you can take the lane. Speed is not a factor.” – Richard Wezensky

“Impeding speed doesn’t appear to be a factor in Florida either. In Daytona Beach, the Florida Department of Transportation has installed “Bike May Use Full Lane” signs on one 6-lane arterial (Nova Rd) which has a speed limit of 50 mph. I’ve never seen anyone ride in this lane, there is an adjacent narrow sidewalk with the right-of-way for a shared-use path upgrade. It’s also a shame because I would love BMUFL signs on many of the narrow two-lane, no shoulder, 25 mph roads in the city so that people behind would chill out when I take the lane.” – Jason Aufdenberg

From J. Leko, Furniture Maker LLC: I’ve got a calendar entry for you. The last Sunday of every month is the Vintage & Classic ride in Huntsville, AL at 14:00 local. Meets at Huntsville Junior High School. No one gets dropped! 😎

From Katie Heaney
Hi fellas,
I just started listening to your podcast. I really enjoy it! I have a question though…
During your Calendar segment you always mention various Bike Parties throughout the country. Thanks for that! But why no mention of San Jose Bike Party? SJBP is the original bike party that started in October 2010. It also boasts the largest monthly ridership of the various Bike Parties by far.
If you decide to add San Jose Bike Party to your calendar, it is the 3rd Friday of the month. Website is sjbikeparty.org. 🙂

E216a REBROADCAST – Scatalogical Emergency

Last week was the Thanksgiving holiday and the guys took a week out of the studio.  Until the next new show, we’re sharing this piece about gastrointestinal troubles and bicycle commutes featuring Aaron & producer Brock from 2014.  Some of you may have heard about Aaron’s recent injury (he’s OK!) – don’t worry, we’ll fill you in with the next show.  Thank you for listening!

Brock gets into a predicament and can’t make it into the studio.  This is an explanation of the predicament.  What happens when you can’t find a bathroom?  And are there any lessons to be learned from such an experience?
note: those sensitive to conversation about bodily functions may wish to bypass this episode, as it contains many references to such.
