E283 – Carl Larson’s Retirement

Carl Larson is the chancellor of bike fun. He’s been a tireless defender of many expressions of how bikes are the most enjoyable way to move around town, and will soon be a resident of another metropolis. We talk about his memories of good times, how he views both advocacy and activism, some interesting run-ins during the Zoobomb, and what comes next.
Here’s the Portland Police training video Carl mentioned!

Also: Brock finally figured out who he passes on his morning commute, and went camping in the rain, and Aaron did some rad climbs, and he forgot he was recording a show.

correction: his name is Ted, but he did the Mont Ventoux & Club des Cingles du Mont-Ventoux ride!

Thanks to our generous sponsor The Beer Mongers and our Patreon donors that keep us going!

E279 – Joe Biel: Good Trouble

Joe Biel has been running Microcosm Publishing, an independent book and ‘zine publishing organization, for twenty years in many locations and iterations, starting with a milk crate he took to music venues that hosted punk shows.  Now he has released his memoir, Good Trouble, about his experience building that history and how it was influenced by his adult diagnosis with Asperger’s Syndrome.  We’re glad he’s kept at it, and joined him at his house to chat about his perspective on the world through the lens of simpler living!

Several anniversary events for Microcosm are planned – a reading on February 11 2016 at Powell’s Books on Hawthorne (Joe’s guest post on their blog here, too!) anda party at Velo Cult Bike Shop & Tavern on February 12 2016!

E277 – Peter Koonce: Transportation Engineer Cowboy

Peter Koonce is a blogging, twittering transportation engineer, a PDX native, a bicycling enthusiast, and a rockstar host of the famous transportation trivia event from the community cycling center.

E243 James Longhurst BIKE BATTLES

Americans have been riding bikes for more than a century now. So why are most American cities still so ill-prepared to handle cyclists? James Longhurst, a historian and avid cyclist, tackles that question by tracing the contentious debates between American bike riders, motorists, and pedestrians over the shared road.

Bike Battles explores the different ways that Americans have thought about the bicycle through popular songs, merit badge pamphlets, advertising, films, newspapers and sitcoms. Those associations shaped the actions of government and the courts when they intervened in bike policy through lawsuits, traffic control, road building, taxation, rationing, import tariffs, safety education and bike lanes from the 1870s to the 1970s.

note: our computer AND backup recorder stopped in the middle of our news section. So if you find yourself wondering “did I miss something?” The answer is yes.

Also: Will Vanlue joins to bring his perspective, aaron rides the solstice, and Lisa is back in PDX!

E230 – Glenn Kubish & Darren Markland: #YEGbike Pocket Sprocket

Glenn Kubish is a longtime listener and supporter of our show.  He’s well connected in the Edmonton, Alberta bicycling community, and when he recommended a guest, we knew that we’d never make it up to Canada in time to interview him, so we asked, “would you be willing to do the interview?” A resounding positive answer meant that we now get to deliver this gem of an interview with a man who, in Glenn’s words, has “the spirit of the @SprocketPodcast” in him. “Plus,” he adds, “he’s a doc, built abamboo bike, roasts his own coffee.”  Darren Markland also sports a wicked ice beard in the winter!

We’re grateful for this little window into the #YEGbike community!  Many thanks to our friends up north, and here’s to hoping there will be a new podcast on the horizon.  Who knows? With enough friendly encouragement, they might just do it…

If you enjoyed this Pocket Sprocket format and feel like you know someone interesting in your town, be sure to get in touch.  We want your positive vibes to spread, and would love to help bring someone’s story to the rest of the world if you’d like to help us find it.  See below for our contact info!

We’ll be back next week with more Portland-produced episodes! See you then.
