E536b – REBROADCAST E317 in memoriam to Dan Gebhart

this week we’re sharing a portion of an episode recorded with Dan Gebhart (who’s a time traveler) in his memory.  The Portland bicycle community lost Dan on September 22 according to an article on BikePortland.org, and we will miss him dearly.  A ride in remembrance is planned for him on Sunday, October 18 at 2pm starting at the Mt. Scott Community Center.

Soren Impey & Dan Gebhart are involved with Bike Loud PDX and drop in to explain why streets don’t have to be dangerous to work, and what their organization is doing to catch the attention of Oregon’s legislators.  They’re riding from Portland to Salem to make their voices heard!

Also: Aaron washes a hat.

E535b – Kofi Kyei in conversation with Christopher Stricklen (We Got To Hang Out S2.E65 excerpt)

We’re excited to bring you an excerpt from the great podcast We Got To Hang Out, now hosted by Christopher Stricklen (of @Photo.Pace, among other things!); Christopher was kind enough to send this snippet of episode 65 with Kofi Kyei of @Ride4Unity in which they discusses the dynamics of the Black experience in the US and the UK.  Listen, and subscribe for more from his show in the future.

E531 – Russ of Path Less Pedaled!

this week’s show is released at a time when devastating wildfires have seriously affected many places on the West Coast.  we stand in solidarity with all who have been affected by these tragic events and encourage those who are able to donate to reputable charities that are assisting with relief efforts.

Russ Roca of The Path Less Pedaled is our guest/interviewer this week!  It’s been several years since he’s been on our show, and now we get to be on his for a livestream (archived on YouTube) where we discuss a little about The Sprocket’s history, and at least the following for Russ:

PLP on Sprocket:
2011 1. after long tour, 2. Brompton tour
2012 New Zealand
A shirtless Brock for dutchtub ad
2014 Oregon scenic bikeways

What’s been going on since Portland?
Move to Missoula

E529 – Chris Smith: 6th Appearance, 2nd Round for Elections

Chris Smith is still our choice for the Oregon tri-county regional government election for Metro Councilor this fall (we spoke with him last on episode 505), and he rejoins us to explain his platform particulars at this stage of the process.  He talks about the primary election results from earlier in the year, compares to an opponent in the race, talks a little about the transportation measure that will be on the ballot, and lets us know how we can help! Find more: chrisformetro.com

Follow this link to make a donation to Chris’ campaign if you’re able – money talks, and if you want to see thoughtful, equitable change in a major city, your gift will make his voice heard.

Also: after the show, cohost Guthrie Straw gives some updates from his self-supported bicycle tour across the state.

There’s a New Podcast in town! Matthew from Episode 362 has a very informative podcast called Wheel Nice. This is a smart and compassionate cycling podcast, look no further. In this first episode, Matthew takes on the subject of death while cycling with both the sensitivity it deserves and enough humor to keep you smiling and engaged. Heads up, I wouldn’t consider it SFW.

Aaron & Anna’s neighbor Larry shares his experience getting into bicycling, and they each trade compliments.  Guest cohost Armando, Portland’s mayor of bike fun, joins in Guthrie’s absence.

Also, Guthrie is quarantining on the road by riding where no one else happens to be, and shares two updates before and after the interview.

E519 – ᐸᐠᐊᐧᒋᓂᓂ (bugwajiniinii, or Dan in MN)

ᐸᐠᐊᐧᒋᓂᓂ (“bugwajiniinii”, or Dan) has been with The Sprocket Podcast since its beginning, and has years of experience in bicycle maintenance, riding, instruction, advocacy with Bike Bemidji, and coffee outside.  We had the pleasure to ask him about his experiences and perspective as an enrolled member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe as we spoke with him for this recording – he in his hand-built tiny house and we in our respective locations.  We also briefly addressed #boatmonth.  Follow his adventures and projects on Instagram at @bugwajiniinii.

Leah Benson was the proprietor of the iconic Gladys Bikes shop on Portland, Oregon’s Alberta Street.  Cassie Hidalgo is the new owner!  We chat with them about the shop, the transition from one era to another, and whether artisan jello shots will be the next can’t-get-enough trend out of Portland.  As always, visit the shop and its exquisite saddle library (among many other things) at 2905 Alberta Street!  Read Leah’s post about her departure and Cassie’s introductory post on the shop’s website.

E492 – How Oregon Got The Idaho Stop Law with Ray & Bjorn

Bjorn Warloe & Ray Thomas both worked on some very important legislation here in Oregon, and they return to the studio (graciously, after attempting a recording a few weeks ago that got dumped by a bad machine) to discuss pitching legislative concepts, persistence, and timing.  The “Idaho Stop Law” allowing bicycle riders to proceed without stopping through a signed intersection was passed in Oregon this year, and will take effect soon!
