E280 – Bobby & Spencer Tour America

Bobby Corbisier & Spencer Callahan are two bike mechanics from Portland who we first met on a bicycle camping trip to Stubb Stewart State Park two years ago!  Since then, they embarked on a crosscountry bicycle tour, starting on established routes, but soon looking for more obscure routes they fashioned themselves.  And they played a game of hot potato.

Also: Aaron shares some Mexico stories, and Brock reluctantly adopted Strava to calculate the inaccuracy of his caloric budget.

E279 – Joe Biel: Good Trouble

Joe Biel has been running Microcosm Publishing, an independent book and ‘zine publishing organization, for twenty years in many locations and iterations, starting with a milk crate he took to music venues that hosted punk shows.  Now he has released his memoir, Good Trouble, about his experience building that history and how it was influenced by his adult diagnosis with Asperger’s Syndrome.  We’re glad he’s kept at it, and joined him at his house to chat about his perspective on the world through the lens of simpler living!

Several anniversary events for Microcosm are planned – a reading on February 11 2016 at Powell’s Books on Hawthorne (Joe’s guest post on their blog here, too!) anda party at Velo Cult Bike Shop & Tavern on February 12 2016!

E278 – Nathan Jones’ Spicy Southwestern…

Nathan Jones is the reigning world champion, but encountered a significant setback on his most recent conquest.  From Portland to California’s Central Valley and back again, but not in the way you’d expect.

Brock lost some important bits of metal, and Aaron went to MEXICO.

Phil in AK approves of the beards.

JohnnyK adds ASCII beard art and thinks cycling is good for your back pains.

Tim is taking the Amtrak sleeper car too!

TopHat says Amtrak ought to allow cargo bikes.  Say it again!

Nathan chimes in on Amtrak too with a story from his childhood.

Doug Robertson is blogging at four season cycling!

Anna says saddle sores are dumb and there are some solutions:
-diaper rash cream
-hydrocortisone cream
-salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide cream (a.k.a the stuff for acne)

Dom from onebikeoneworld.com shares an unusual saddle to avoid the unpleasantness:

Drew the Welder says saddle sores could be boil/abscess instead of lymph system.  Best to stop riding until it goes away.

Also he mentions the Rinko for easy train travel!

Scott says everyone should get “‘bent” – as in recumbent bicycles. He referencesbikeism, and Australia’s HPV race.

PBJMatt asks: Why is it that all the great adventurers are British?

Review from Logan!  “Great podcast and I look forward to their show every week. Their perspectives foster community and collaboration.”

E275 – Emily from Hub Bicycle Co.: IN PORTLAND

Emily from the Hub Bicycle Company in Cambridge, MA is on a road trip up the west coast of the USA, and stopped into the studio to give a proper interview afterher induction a year ago in the basement of her Boston area shop.  We talk about the two coasts, MTB in Santa Barbara, camping and renting cars when it gets cold, prairies full of elk, Portland and redevelopment, and other things.  What a great chat!  Emily is totally a game day player for podcasting.

We bid Aaron a fond farewell as he begins a new life south of the border.  (just kidding – he’ll be back in two weeks!)
